Communique from an ALF group in Finland

Note: The raccoon dogs they refer to are a different species than the North American raccoon. This is actually a canine species that has a raccoon like face mask.

The Finnish ALFSG recieved the following communique:

“Kiihtelysvaara, October 13th

The farm near Pitkäjärvi is guarded by at least two guard dogs near the entrance. The dogs understood whose side we are on and they let us be in peace.

At the farm there were thousands of raccoon dogs without any possibilities for natural behaviour. In nature raccoon dogs sleep through the winter, but at the farms they can't. Raccoon dogs have only been farmed from the 70's, so the animals have all the chances to survive in the nature.

The farm was in bad shape and the manure was piled in the back of the farm without composting (as the law requires in Finland - translators note). Especially the sheds located outside the fence were in really bad shape: there was a lot of animal manure and the automatic water system was broken.

Best evidence of how the farmer relates to animals and how the animals well-being is considered is a breeding card found from the farm with writing "bleeds a lot of blood from cunt".

We opened the back gate of the farm. We took couple of hundred breeding cards and opened hundreds of cages. Some of the cages had to be opened from the top and they looked difficult for raccoon dogs. That is why we cut the back wall away from the cage. We also carried some of the animals to the safety to the forest.

Because of the lack of time, we couldn't do more. At least some of the farms animals friday the 13th was a lucky day.

We wish all of the animals a good escape journey!”
